Who does the government look after better victims or criminals?

A few weeks ago i was seriously assulted in a random unprovoked attack in a street and was beaten to the point i was unconcous and rushed to hospital, as a result of this i recieved a fractured eye socket and sternum, also many cuts and bruises.
The doctor told me i wasnt to go to work for at least 4weeks, due to the nature of my job i could injure myself even further if i didnt rest for this time. Because i didnt have much savings and couldnt work i was them stuck with the problem of somehow paying rent/bills and buying food for the next 4 weeks, i went to centrelink and was turned away, their reason was i had only been living in australia for 1yr 7months and you need to be in australia for 2yrs to qualify for help, so i have been paying my taxes here for 1yr& 7mnths so poeple like the horrible man who did this to me can have a roof over his head and fed(in prison) but when i need to be fed and have a roof over my head i get written off. If it wasnt for the amazing guys from work paying my rent and giving me money for groceries i woiuld have been completely screwd, i also have had to return to work 2weeks early against doctors orders, lets just hope i dont hurt myself.
Thanks from the bottom of my heart to the awesome blokes at work and No thanks whatsoever to the australian government!

How embarrassing!

I am so sorry you have gone through this terrible time. And I am so embarrassed that you have been a/ physically hurt and b/treated like that by our government. Unfortunately, alot of us,even those of us that have been born and bred here get treated the same.
My thoughts are with you and good luck recovering.

Its no wonder.....

It’s no wonder people take things into there own hands and sort things/people out themselves. The people with the authority don’t do anything out of fear for themselves, fair enough, but don’t take a job you not prepared to do just so you can wear a shiny badge and inflate your ego a little. I use to work in Palm Beach and every time we called the police they were a no show, EVERY TIME! That police station in Palm Beach is a waste of tax payer money, if your in trouble in Palm Beach, don’t expect any help from them, never manned after 4ish (correct me if I’m wrong) But no doubt we will need to wait until a few people get killed, or a police officer/politicians family member gets killed before they do anything!

Just my thoughts

I don't blame the police themselves for the problems, but the fact that they are crucially understaffed and the few police they do have are bogged down with paperwork and other ridiculous things, rather than being freed up to help us.

At any given time, most areas on the Gold Coast are only being staffed by a handful of police men and women - that's a fact. At one point about 3 years ago, I heard that the watchouse in Surfers Paradise had to be cIosed down because the one member of staff that was available had to go to another station. The story goes that he put a note on the door to say the station was not manned and gave a number to phone for another station. As a result he was disciplined and demoted. I should just say that is only something that was passed on to me by a friend who is a policeman so it is really just heresay.

If you knew how few policemen are actually active on the Gold Coast at any given time you would be terrified.

And, as for the few police available, they juggle ever increasing pointless paperwork, ridiculously low numbers of staff and escalating crime rates - so anything which is not a violent crime just gets ignored.

Although I have also experienced similar disinterest from other police stations when we have phoned for assistance, II don't blame the policemen and women, I blame the politicians for not (at least) quadrupling their numbers.

Regards

Don't blame the government

It's unfortunate what happened to you, but you need to understand why such legislation is in place, and that is to stop people from moving to Australia, stopping work for whatever reason, and living off welfare. I understand that you only had good intentions, but there are a small number of people who have abused the system in the past to the extent that such measures have to be put in place.
